TOM Adams produced another dominant performance to win the Stoop Fell Race at Haworth on Sunday for the fourth time.

The Ilkley Harriers runner completed the 8km course in 30min 14sec and won by more than two minutes from the eight-times winner Rob Hope.

Revenge proved sweet for Adams because he had been outsprinted for the victory by Hope in last year’s race.

Nichola Jackson won the ladies race for the second year from talented under-18 runner Sarah Pickering who took eight seconds off her Ilkley Harriers team-mate Jemima Elgood’s course record which was only set last year, as she completed the course in 39:34.

Elgood finished fourth and with Kate Archer coming sixth, the Harriers took the ladies team prize.

The FV category was won by their team-mate Helene Whitaker, who under her maiden name of Diamantides, enjoyed many glittering distance running successes.

Her greatest feat came in 1992 at the 220 mile Dragon’s Back five-day race running the length of Wales, which she won with Martin Stone in 38hrs 38 mins.

Helene held the Langdale Horseshoe record for an incredible 25 years until this year when Victoria Wilkinson broke it.

Pickering said: “This season I’ve learned that even if you are training all year with an ultimate aim in mind, and you don’t achieve it, you’ve got to pick yourself up.

“I wanted to get into the England team for the World Mountain Running Youth Cup like I did in 2015, but coming sixth in the trial by a few seconds meant I was first reserve.

“I know it’s still an amazing achievement and I held onto that truth. As I went on to be the 2016 English Junior girls under-18 champion.

“Finally I ran for England in the British and Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships and Uphill only Home Countries International.

“It was a 3.2km climb with 465m of ascent up Skiddaw on a clear da which meant exceptional views up-top, that really was something special.”
