HOLDERS Bradford Park Avenue needed a stunning late goal to defeat Thackley in the third round of the West Riding County Cup last night.

There was a doubt if the game would even go ahead as fog descended on Dennyfield on a bitterly cold evening but the teams came out to do their warm ups for a second time and the game got underway almost half an hour late.

Avenue were hoping to hand former Thackley keeper Ed Hall his debut but he was ineligible, so Jon Worsnop continued his run between the sticks and the visitors had just two substitutes.

Worsnop was soon in action as he denied Declan Howe, but Avenue also threatened early on with John Cofie - making his first start - twice going close.

The visitors almost broke the deadlock through Emile Sinclair but the home side had the ball in the net soon after, only for an offside flag to deny Joe Brown, who had headed home a cross from skipper Pat McGuire.

The tie was decided by one of Avenue’s two substitutes as Bradford-born assistant player-manager Danny Boshell, who had replaced his brother Nicky just after the hour, netted a rasping last-minute volley.

Vanarama National League outfit Guiseley needed penalties to edge past Toolstation Northern Counties East League visitors Selby Town.

The Robins are from the lower tier in the NCEL but threatened a giant- killing as they led 2-1 in the second half.

The Lions had broken the deadlock early on following a ninth-minute penalty, with Joel Logan firing home, but the visitors were awarded their own spot-kick minutes before the break, and Jason Crisp equalised.

Deep into the second half, the visitors took the lead when Gary Lumley headed home from close range but the home side hit back through Adam Boyes.

The tie went straight to penalties after 90 minutes and the Lions won the shoot-out 4-2.

The Lions will face Farsley Celtic in the quarter-finals after the Celts eased through 3-1 at home to Selby’s league counterparts Glasshoughton Welfare.

Farsley dominated long spells but it took them until the 40th minute to unlock the visitors’ defence.

Adam Clayton netted the opener following a corner, and just three minutes later James Walshaw swept in a Lewis Nightingale cross.

Walshaw was involved in the incident that led to the third Farsley goal and a reduction in numbers for the visitors.

The striker was one on one with Glasshoughton keeper Andy Holland and was fouled.

Holland was dismissed and striker Andy Horbury donned the gloves. He got a hand to Walshaw’s free-kick for the foul outside the area but couldn’t keep it out.

However, Nathan Keightley pegged one back for the spirited visitors soon after with a shot from a tight angle.

Farsley’s Evo-Stik League rivals Brighouse Town were held to another draw in Division One North.

Paul Quinn’s men could have leapfrogged their neighbours with a win but will be satisfied with a point after going down to ten men before the break.

Town had skipper James Pollard sent off for a second yellow card when he conceded a penalty midway through the first half against struggling Hyde United.

The home side’s Andy Bishop failed to test Brighouse keeper Tom Taylor as he shot wide from the spot.

Both sides battled but ended up sharing the spoils, with Town dropping  two places to ninth, while Hyde slipped into the bottom five.
