HORSFORTH'S David Stone is delighted to have added two more medals to his glittering collection at the recent Paralympic Games in Rio.

The talented cyclist described the event as "an amazing experience" and said his latest successes were more than he could have expected.

The 35-year-old admitted: "It’s been a hard few years but to come out with two podium finishes was great. Rio was such a fantastic setting for the Games with lots of different things going on.

"The Brazilian people were so welcoming and they really put on an incredible Games. I would say it was the people who made it so special and also for me personally, winning the medals was up there too.

"In the end I won bronze in the time trial and silver in the men’s road race, which took my total of Paralympic medals to six. The silver was particularly special as, for me, the road race is particularly difficult.

"The course did not necessarily suit me and it was a defensive race, so to come over the line second was a great feeling."

There was also a treat for Stone after the event. "I remember going to a roof top party on Copacabana Beach with my coach and friends when I finished racing, that was something really cool to do," he said. "It was put on by Nissan and it was a great backdrop to celebrate the success of the Nissan athletes."

Stone is a Nissan ambassador and gave an insight to life for the competitors in Rio. "I was staying in the Village for the Games, which was a little further out," he said. "The Village is always a very interesting environment to be in.

"It can be very intense as you are surrounded by athletes all wanting to do their very best. I wasn’t competing until towards the end of the Games so that can be hard when other athletes finish with their events, but I’m used to it now after being to previous Games.

"Since I’ve been back from Rio, I’ve hardly been on the bike. Instead I’ve been spending time with family and friends, having a bit of a break and reflecting on what I achieved in Rio.

"I know it’s a long way off but I definitely want to work towards trying to get to Tokyo 2020. The thing I love about cycling is pushing myself on the bike and putting myself under pressure to do well. All the time I enjoy that, then I will keep going.

"In the short term, I’ve got the World Championships next year so I’ll be aiming for that."
