Guiseley 0 Barnsley 2

MARK Bower’s Lions suffered their second defeat against Championship opposition in seven days at the hands of newly-promoted Barnsley on Tuesday night.

Guiseley had a good chance to open the scoring but close season signing Michael Rankine’s strike from outside the area was just wide.

Javan Vidal created an opening for himself shortly after skipping past four defenders but then scuffed his effort.

The Tykes went ahead when James Carvell volleyed home Adam Hammill's cross at the far post for the opener after 22 minutes.

Barnsley doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half as half-time replacements Kayden Jackson and Stefan Payne combined with the latter, the former Dover player, blasting home from the edge of the box.

Jackson almost made it 3-0 late on with two fine efforts but found Guiseley's trialist goalkeeper in fine form late on.

The Lions next game is away at Hyde on Tuesday (7.45) before entertaining Leeds United at Nethermoor on Friday (7:45).

Guiseley 1 Bradford City 1

FORMER Lions striker James Hanson returned to Nethermoor for Bradford City's first match in Stuart McCall's second spell as manager.

Hanson was one of the established first teamers in a Bantams line up that also included a number of trialists.

Guiseley also had a sprinkling of trialists with the most interesting one being the former Scunthorpe left back Marcus Williams.

The 30-year-old was having his first outing since returning from a spell in India with Kerala Blasters and impressed up against City winger Mark Marshall.

His performance drew praise from manager Mark Bower afterwards and he must be a strong contender to fill the void left by the departure of Ben Parker.

The first half was primarily concentrated in the midfield although the visitors had the slight edge but found Guiseley keeper Dan Atkinson in top form as he pulled out a couple of dazzling saves, while Marshall hit the bar with a shot.

There was more incident in the second half and Billy Clarke struck the bar before Guiseley went ahead through Oli Johnson.

He fired into the far corner after former City youth captain and Adam Boyes had combined to create the opportunity after Rankine's free kick had rebounded off a post.

The Lions looked for a second goal but were caught out from a quickly-taken free kick. Trialist Tom Hateley - son of former England striker Mark – lashed a fierce shot into the roof of the net.

Guiseley 0 Huddersfield Town 1

HUDDERSFIELD Town included their £1.8m record signing Christopher Schindler as they recorded a one-goal win over the Lions at Nethermoor last Wednesday.

The Championship side dominated possession and were deserved winners. Shaun Scannell scored the only goal late in the first half. His shot flew into the net off of a post.

The Terriers, who changed their entire team at half-time, also hit the post and the bar twice as they kept the Lions under pressure.

Oli Johnson went closest to scoring for Guiseley in the first half while Jordan Preston missed out in a one-on-one late in the game with the Town keeper.
