Guiseley 2, Bromley 0

LATE goals in each half saw Guiseley put an end to a three-game Vanarama National League losing streak, the result being even more satisfying after the previous week's last-gasp heartbreak.

The Lions banked three points from the visit of Bromley, fellow newcomers to the country's fifth division, just seven days after Mark Bower's men suffered disappointment at Tranmere Rovers.

Guiseley conceded a disputed corner three minutes into first-half stoppage time and lost by the odd goal when the Merseysiders netted a penalty in the 93rd minute.

This time the late drama was all in their favour as Oliver Norburn crushed the spirits of the visitors with a goal on the stroke of the interval, before Anthony Dudley finished them off in the 88th minute.

Bower said: "Since we were promoted, I would say that was our best overall performance. I felt we were in charge throughout.

"You always want that second goal just to give you a cushion and it was a long time coming, so there were some nervous moments.

"Sides at this level are always capable of producing that one flash of inspiration or brilliance and it could have come – like Oli's goal that flew in from 25 yards, while he'd had one earlier that hit the bar.

"But Oli has that in his game – he's able to do something out of the ordinary – and it is players like that who make all the difference. Anthony is another and I thought he deserved his goal.

"It was an important win for us and I thought it was a deserved win, given the performance, the run both clubs had been on and the conditions."

Bromley had also lost their previous three league games and remain above Guiseley in the table but never made a contest of it.

The pitch was playable at kick-off time but the last ten minutes of the first half were played in incessant rain that made it difficult for players to keep their feet.

Guiseley had to show their character in the opening exchanges but began to get a grip on the match and build pressure.

It almost paid dividends when Dudley hit a half-volley across the face of goal that was deflected for a corner.

Norburn's 39th-minute effort from distance came back off the bar and two follow-up shots were blocked. However, Norburn was not to be denied and he netted a scintillating strike just before the break.

Bromley were deflated and there was no response from them at the start of the second period.

They forced some half-chances as the half wore on and manager Mark Goldberg made changes but to no avail.

With less than two minutes remaining, visiting keeper Chris Kettings – who had been on top form in the second half – did well again to parry an Adam Boyes effort.

But livewire Dudley was hovering and fired the loose ball into the far corner.
