Cheltenham Town 5 Guiseley 0

GUISELEY slumped to a thumping midweek defeat at high-flying Cheltenham as boss Mark Bower admitted: "Everything that could go wrong did go wrong."

It was a nightmare trip to Gloucestershire for the Lions as they finished with ten men and suffered a number of injury setbacks.

Defender Adam Lockwood was shown a straight red card for a professional foul early in the second half after Cheltenham had raced into a two-goal lead.

Fellow centre-back Rob Atkinson was also forced off early on after pulling his hamstring, while Liam Dickinson and Ben Parker picked up knocks as well.

Bower said: "Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We lost our two centre-halves, Liam Dickinson broke his nose and Ben Parker has taken a whack right at the end.

"They ruthlessly punished us and taught us a lesson about why they are near the top of the league and why we aren't near the top of the league."

Jack Munns got assists for both of the hosts' early goals, the first of which was scored in the opening minute.

Billy Waters took Munns' high through-ball, flicked it over Lions keeper Steve Drench and then nodded home.

Cheltenham's second was from a more traditional delivery as Rob Dickie met Munns' ninth-minute corner with a firm header.

Guiseley regrouped and ended the first half strongly, with home keeper Dillon Phillips making good saves to deny Danny Boshell and Adam Boyes.

However, any signs of a comeback after the break were dashed by Lockwood's dismissal.

The home side were three goals to the good soon after the hour mark when Waters grabbed his second.

Waters then turned provider for Munns late on and, deep into stoppage time, James Rowe netted his first for the Robins.

Bower said: "We gave the game away in the first ten or 15 minutes with the two goals that we conceded.

"It was a really poor first goal to concede, in the first minute of the game, and we just invited pressure on ourselves by giving the ball away.

"For the second goal, it was a ball over the top and Rob Atkinson is favourite for it but pulls his hamstring in the process and they score from the resulting corner.

"At 2-0 down, you're looking at a mountain to climb against Cheltenham. But I thought after that we actually played quite well and I couldn't fault the players' effort."
