SILSDEN upset the odds, knocking higher-ranked neighbours Guiseley out of the West Riding County Cup at the second round stage last night.

The home side broke the deadlock following a defensive error by their National League visitors.

The Cobbydalers’ Joe Mitchell pounced to fire his side in front, but just before the break Josh Snowden netted the equaliser, slotting in after picking up Liam Dickinson’s knock-down at a corner.

The Lions had plenty of possession in the second half but couldn’t penetrate, and a Nicky McNally chip looped over visiting keeper Dan Atkinson eight minutes from time to send the Cobbydalers through.

FARSLEY CELTIC had their hands full when Guiseley’s National League rivals FC Halifax Town visited Throstle Nest in the same competition.

The Celts' keeper Jake Lofthouse picked up a yellow card early on when he raced out of his area and fouled Halifax forward Danny Hattersley. Josh MacDonald fired the resulting free-kick over the target.

However, both of those Shaymen were not denied first half goals. MacDonald slotted in after good work from Shaun Tuton, Town’s skipper on the night, and just after the half hour Hattersley had time and space as he rifled in from the edge of the area.

Both sides had chances in the second half with the Celts knocking at the door late on, but there was no addition to the scoreline as the Shaymen ran out 2-0 winners.

ALBION SPORTS are in Northern Counties East League Premier Division action tonight as the eighth-placed club host lower mid-table Pontefract Collieries. Kulwinder Sandhu’s side will be looking for the home win that will see them reach the 30-point mark.
