Guiseley 2, Welling United 0

A FIRST-half brace from debutant loanee Anthony Dudley steered Guiseley to a home win that saw them overhaul Welling United in the lower reaches of the Vanarama National League table.

After three defeats and two draws, the Lions' first win of October came on the last day of the month.

Dudley was brought in from League One outfit Bury on Friday and Lions boss Mark Bower had no qualms about throwing him straight into the fray.

"Duds came to us highly recommended by a very trusted person and he did really well," said Bower.

"His two goals have given us a platform from which to build and I thought we controlled the game from then.

"He has probably not played in his best position but still done the business and has certainly put pressure on other people to keep on their toes to stay in the side – and that's what it's all about."

Guiseley displaced the Kent club in 17th place and Bower feels the victory brought relief and boosted confidence ahead of a tough November.

He said: "We got an early goal and going in front made a real difference to us. I thought we restricted them after that by being well organised and disciplined.

"In the second half, they had more possession but I thought we had the best three chances.

"We needed a boost and it was a good win against a side who had been on a good run and had won 4-0 in midweek. It was really pleasing to get the three points."

It took Dudley just nine minutes to open his Guiseley account. He picked up Ryan Toulson's cut back and his shot from a tight angle beat the visiting keeper.

Opposite number Steve Drench had little to do but, when called upon, his positioning was as vital as his agility.

Adam Boyes was the home side's busiest forward and remained a threat, while Welling's main man Michael Bakare went closest to grabbing an equaliser.

But then Dudley doubled the Lions' lead just before the break with his second goal after taking a through-ball from Gavin Rothery.
