National League Two North: Huddersfield 8, Otley 26

OTLEY gave early notice of their intentions in this National League Two North derby, running back a deep kick-off and scoring, via winger Gareth Newman, after precise passing with just 82 seconds on the clock.

Stephen Depledge hit an upright with the conversion attempt and, minutes later, with Mike Coady again prominent, the visitors went close, winger Alex Beaumont being tackled into touch.

Huddersfield struck back with one of many penalties which came their way, by fly half Chris Bell on 22 minutes, but Otley had the edge in scrum and line-out.

However, they allowed the hosts to pick the ball up at the back of a maul, flanker Nick Rhodes breaking through and putting Bell away to speed down the wing and score.

Otley came back strongly to hammer away at the home line and, after three successive penalties, a penalty try was awarded in Otley's favour, Sam Allan adding the conversion for a 12-8 half-time lead.

The visitors were quickly into their stride on resumption, Huddersfield allowing the re-start kick to bounce and it was snapped up by Newman, who clean through with just 37 seconds gone, Allan’s conversion giving them a comfortable lead.

The fly half was wide with a penalty attempt before a flurry of penalty kicks kept Otley on the defensive but they handled the situation calmly, returning to attack in an attempt on a fourth try, and it came in the last minute.

A turnover in the Otley half and precise passing put Newman on a run and he rounded the immediate defence before cutting inside to cross for his hat-trick, Allan’s conversion bringing the game to a close.
