PETE Williams romped to victory in the Ilkley men’s Elite Grand Prix on Wednesday night.

The Embsay-based rider finished well clear of Keighley’s Tom Moses who won the sprint down The Grove for second place.

The victory was a perfect boost for Williams ahead of Sunday’s National Road Race Championships at Lincoln.

And the One Pro rider, who recently won at Pontefract, also has his eye on success at the town centre races at Otley and Skipton on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

The 28-year-old was delighted with his latest success for the newly-formed One Pro team which is backed by former England cricketer Matt Prior.

Williams said: “There was a good crowd and the atmosphere was great in Ilkley. It was also nice to win again.

“I have done quite a lot of this type of race this year in the British Tour Series and I am certainly looking forward to Otley and Skipton.

“Otley is always a great night while Skipton will be my home town race. It is going to be great racing down the High Street. I think the spectators will be in for a treat.”

William is enjoying a fine season. He won the first stage of the five-day Baltyk Karkonosze Tour in Poland last month. “I held on to the yellow jersey until the final time trial in the mountains,” said Williams, who finished third overall.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s National Championships where he will be competing against his training companions Scott Thwaites from Burley-in-Wharfedale who rides for German outfit BORA Argon 18, Keighley’s Moses bothers Joe and Tom (JLT Condor, and Tom Barras (NFT), Williams said: “I am feeling in good shape and looking forward to it. I think there is a good chance that the race won’t be won by a Team Sky rider this time.

“I have a feeling that Adam and Sam Yates of ORICA GreenEdge will go well.”

There was a double success at Ilkley on Wednesday night for the talented young Otley rider Tom Pidcock. He won both the under-16 and and amateur men’s races. He will be looking to repeat those successes at Otley next Wednesday where his father Giles is the race director.

The under-14 race went to another Otley-based rider, Sam Watson from Chevin Cycles.com Trek
