THE Three Peaks was the latest event in the Ilkley Harriers Race League continued and is the longest race in this year’s competition.

The famous race, now in its 61st year, covers 23 miles over the Yorkshire peaks of Penyghent, Whernside and finally Ingleborough.

Dan Wilkinson collected the most league points, finishing 51st overall in a time of 3hr 30min. Ben Sheppard also finished strongly in 3h38.

Conditions were tough with wind, rain and even snow, but that didn’t stop Ilkley’s ladies, Jann Smith, Alison Weston and Helen Waddington from putting in a strong performance to take the second team prize.

The race was won by Ricky Lightfoot Salomon International team in a time of 2:5:42, the first lady was Helen Bonsor of Carnethy HR in a time 3:27:24.

First home for Otley was Shane Ewen in 3:56:11, also for Otley were Jeremy Stewart in 3:58:01, John Armitstead in 4:06:00, Andrew Hunt in 4:18:20, Graham Lake in 4:19:25 and finally the club president Matt Podd in 5:03:14.

Also on Sunday was the Blackpool Marathon, The winner was Daniel Chan in 2:33:19 and the first lady was Laura Allen from Totley in 3:11:21. The only Otley representative was Garry Cochrane who finished in 3:35:51.

The prize giving saw ace director Paul Dennison from Menston presented with an inscribed glass tankard to mark his 40 years involvement with the Three Peaks Race.

He began as a summit marshal on Ingleborough and Penyghent before marshalling at Ribblehead checkpoint and being promoted to race director 32 years ago.
