GLUSBURN builder and stonemason Nathan Wrigglesworth won the Ilkley Grand National Trial for the fourth time.

Eighty eight years on since Bradford's Eddie Flintoff rode a Sunbeam motorcycle to victory, the cross country timed event is still thriving.

Wrigglesworth was the class act through the 18 observed sections on Beamsley Moor, losing just 14 marks. His major losses, six marks, were in the How Gill group alongside the A59 trunk road. His other eight marks were all individual in eight different sections.

Conditions throughout the trial were difficult. The observers at Kex Beck were blasted by gale force winds that threatened to blow competitors off their machines.

Fellbeck dairy farmer Richard Shepherd experienced no problems with the inclement weather or his Repsol Honda machine. He rocketed round the ten-mile moorland lap three times, clocking an amazing 1 hour 54 minutes and 46 seconds. High speeds were the order of the day.

Guiseley's Joe Jennings, who finished third in the Grand National class was using sixth gear on his 300cc Gas Gas machine. On the final run from the last section he was travelling at 40 mph in knee deep moorland grass and heather. One hidden rock would have spelt disaster!

Entries were slightly down on previous years, with 21 contenders on the title course and a further 19 on the two-lap clubman course.

David Watson was riding well in his first cross country event for some considerable time. The Richmond trialler jetted home from Australia, where he has been on attachment to Scania Trucks servicing the huge road train transporter. Rain and cold weather are a rarity in Adelaide.

Watson was doing nicely until he collected a large stone in the rear chain of his father Barry's Montesa. "I lost time sorting it out, then along came Harden's Dave Pickles and loaned me a large adjustable spanner to get the back wheel out and shift the rock. Thank you Dave."

Baildon's Adam Elliott just won the two lap clubman class from Burnley's Tyler Farrow and Wyke contender Mick Ward. The latter was very happy to cross the finishing line on Beamsley Moor on Saturday but he missed second place by just two penalties.
