ILKLEY’s young guns have been attracting plenty of attention during the club’s fine start to their North One East campaign.

Winger Ben Magee’s performances have led to him being named in the Yorkshire under-20 side to face Cheshire on Sunday while flanker Will Coates will be on the bench.

A third Ilkley player, centre Elliott Morgan, was in the initial squad but has been sidelined with glandular fever.

As he prepared his troops for Saturday’s long trip to Northern, coach Rhys Morgan paid tribute to the contributions of Magee and Coates.

He said: “Ben has been scoring lots of tries and has done really well since he joined us from Old Grovians.

“Will’s success has come as a result of our injury crisis. He got his chance because of the long list of back row absentees and has taken it with both hands. I have been delighted with the progress he has made because he has put in a lot of hard work.”

Morgan is hoping that his side strengthen their position in the league at Northern.

“I know some people were disappointed with Saturday’s 21-13 win over Old Crossleyans, but having reflected on it, I am pleased we stuck to our game plan and improved our discipline in the second half,” he said.

Work on the club’s new fitness and rehabilitation centre at Stacks Field will begin on Monday. “It will make the clubhouse about a third as big again,” said the press officer Tom Gillon.

A section of the small car park will be fenced off at the river end of the clubhouse but the rest of this car park and the mainone should be available for use throughout the work which is expected to finish by mid-April.
