Ben Rhydding 3 Brooklands 2nds 7

Ben Rhydding once again featured in a game that produced ten goals and were on the wrong end of the result.

Poor discipline caused them problems throughout and once again, a disallowed goal at a crucial moment, took the match away from them.

Brooklands scored in the first minute, slicing open the Rhydding defence and tapping in an easy goal.

Worse was to follow as captain Will Musgrave was sent off for challenging the umpire in the second minute.

The Rhydding defence struggled to find shape and Brooklands found an easy shot to go to 2-0 ahead in the tenth minute.

Rhydding got back into the game with some strong forward play and Max Helme won a corner which Callum Franks neatly converted.

Young Matthew Ramshaw provided the opportunity for Franks to score again with an intelligent ball into the circle to make it 2-2.

Two yellow cards reduced Rhydding to nine men and reckless tackling drew a penalty stroke just when Rhydding had got through the suspensions and were playing with more balance. Brooklands seized their chance to make it 3-2.

Rhydding had the chance to make an impact early in the second half with a couple of corners but Brooklands turned this to their advantage with an impressive fast break to make it 4-2.

Rhydding defended with stamina and were rewarded when Connor Dowley put away a corner at close range to make it 4-3.

What happened next was excruciating and turned the game. Rhydding with the upper hand scored a great goal via Matty Birch but the loud home Brooklands crowd barracked the umpire who ruled the ball was not inside the D.

The video footage afterwards showed the ball to be at least a metre inside and therefore completely legal.

This would have made it 4-4 but the morale of the away team began to dissolve at this turning point.

Brooklands scored three goals in quick succession as Rhydding fell apart and lost 7-3. Despite their considerable misfortune it cannot disguise the fact that there are some serious problems to address if this new-look squad is to compete properly in this league.
