Ben Rhydding 1 Wakefield 0

A Ben Rhydding side missing several influential players defeated Wakefield to record their first Investec Women's National League Conference North win of the season.

Wakefield's relentless pressure right from the start pinned the home side back in their half and it was some well organised and determined defending from Ben Rhydding's defensive line that kept the score level at half-time.

Wakefield started the strongest in the second half too, winning but failing to convert a number of penalty corners. A fantastic goal-line clearance by Tanisha Janzen and numerous outstanding saves by player of the match, goalkeeper Charlotte Smith, ensured that the home side's goal remained unbreached.

Ben Rhydding struggled to create chances of their own but on a counter-attack, Jen Wilson managed to work the ball onto the defender's foot to earn a well-deserved penalty corner. A straight strike by Janzen was saved but Sarah Bell scrambled the ball over the line from the rebound.

The hard-earned victory was topped off by cup success against Sheffield on Sunday.

Rhydding went through on penalty strokes, winning 3-2. They wait to hear who they will meet in the next round on October 26.

Thsi Saturday sees another home league match, against Loughborough Students (1.30pm).
