Lymm 17 Otley 32

Otley took 35 players for a run out against Division Three side Lymm, coming away with a 32-17 win.

Speedy left winger Kristian Sharples, a close-season signing from Old Brodleians, marked his debut with a try.

Matt Heaton (2), Arnie Ellison, Tom O’Donnell and newly-returned skipper Jamie Sutton also claimed touchdowns.

Goal kicking proved difficult in the windy conditions with Stephen Depledge added a solitary conversion.

This Saturday’s second practice match is a re-run of May’s Yorkshire Cup final against Wharfedale.

The National League One side triumphed on that occasion, but Otley still have fond memories of last year when they won the corresponding friendly at Threshfield.

There will be at least three familiar faces in the Wharfedale line-up.

Scrum half James Doherty, who will lead the Wharfedale side, was backs coach at Cross Green last year.

In the pack, second row Simon Willet will have his second Wharfedale outing after his summer move from Otley.

The third former Cross Greener in the visitors’ line up will be exciting young winger Oliver Cicognini, who made the switch to Wharfedale last year.

Admission is free on Saturday when the match will be preceeded by a fixture at 1pm between Otley Saracens and Harrogate Georgians.

The main game kicks off at 3pm and among the attractions for the crowd will be a barbecue.
