Coaches hope Yarnbury get the winning habit

If experience of their coaches triumphing at Twickenham is any omen, then Yarnbury must be a confident bunch ahead of their RFU Senior Vase final against Newent on Sunday (1.00).

Head coach Bob Hood has won 11 of his 12 matches at Twickenham, be they with Yorkshire, Yorkshire Under-21s or Yorkshire Under-20s, while his assistant Gary Walker has been there three times with Otley juniors and won all three!

If only life were that simple . . . at least Yarnbury have already guaranteed promotion from SSE Yorkshire Division Two, thanks to two bonus points, despite losing 38-32 at Old Rishworthians last Saturday.

Now comes the second half of the equation against a Gloucestershire side that well and truly put Baildon to the sword in last season’s RFU Junior Vase final.

This attempt for a double has been on Hood’s radar since the turn of the year. He explained: “Having finished third last season, which put us into the Senior Vase, we were always going to have a shot at promotion but we wanted to reassess where we were at Christ-mas before thinking about Twickenham.

“It wasn’t a great performance last weekend but every dark cloud has a silver lining and our winger Ellis Gomersall scored three tries.”

Hood hasn’t spoken to Dave Duxbury, who coached Baildon last season against Newent, explaining: “Newent are a much-changed side from then, but we intend to try and move them around.”

Yarnbury won’t be lacking for support at Twickenham, with Hood adding: “We are taking eight or nine coaches down, and there are plenty of people going under their own steam. We could have 500 there.”
