Lizzie Armitstead, above, scored her fourth podium spot in a row in the World Cup for women, yesterday Only winner Ferrnad Prevot was able to stay in front of the British champion on the steep climb in the Fleche Wallone Classic race in Belgium.

Armitstead was disappointed Ferrand Prevot passed her just before the line, but was happy with her result.

She said: “This is quite a different race from the early spring classics and I was not really sure if I could battle for the podium again.

“But I felt strong and gave everything I had to get to the top of the climb.

“Maybe I started to sprint a little too early, because when she was able to accelerate I wasn’t able to follow.”

The Boels Dolmans rider is now in a stronger position in the World Cup standings.

The imminent return to action of Olympic World Road Race champion Marianne Voss will add extra interest to the forthcoming races.
