Lizzie Armitstead’s chances of winning Commonwealth Games gold have been boosted.

The Otley woman triumphed in the women’s road race at the British Cycling National Championships in Glasgow city centre last June, and the same course will be used for the Commonwealth Games road race, organisers have announced.

Cyclists will speed along Argyle Street and Buchanan Street – Glasgow’s main pedestrianised shopping streets – on a 14-kilometre circuit starting and finishing at Glasgow Green.

The route also takes in the city’s west end, and Mark Cavendish won the men’s race.

Glasgow 2014 organisers also revealed the route for the time trial cycling event on July 31.

Male competitors will ride 40km and women 30km on a single-loop course starting at Glasgow Green and taking in the countryside of East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire.
