Defeat in the dark for Otley

Ilkley Gazette: Mark Ireland scored Otley's only points with a penalty Mark Ireland scored Otley's only points with a penalty

Hull 12, Otley 3

For the first hour of play a scoreless draw appeared inevitable in this SSE National League Two North clash as neither side looked to have the ability to score.

However, to be fair Hull, with lock Connor Murphy and prop Paul Schofield regularly breaking the line, did look slightly the more likely.

The scrums were a complete shambles and turnovers were abundant, and accordingly there was no continuity of play.

This was magnified by a nasty injury to home replacement forward Ben Dorrington, who suffered what turned out to be a badly dislocated elbow while attempting to force his way over the line.

Forty-two minutes later, after the visit of a paramedic who eventually ordered an ambulance, the game re-started - but at no higher standard.

Each side had failed with a penalty attempt but in the darkness on 62 minutes, Mark Ireland put Otley three points ahead.

But five minutes later a finely judged crosskick by fly half James Cameron from the left touchline floated down into the hands of right winger James Kirk, who had a simple trot over.

With the Christmas decorations gleaming in the complete darkness, it appeared that flanker Joe Stafford went in at the posts on 80 minutes, Cameron converting to leave Otley once again pointless.
