Karen Graham, one of Ilkley’s top swimmers swept the board at annual British Gas ASA Masters National Championships, at Ponds Forge in Sheffield last weekend.
Karen, who swims in the 45-49 years age category, had a great weekend picking up four golds in the 1,500m, 800m, 400m and 200m freestyle and achieving a new British Record in the 200m, along with two silvers in the 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Sue Harris (40-44 years), one of Ilkley’s emerging Masters swimmers, also made her debut at the championship.
She competed in four events the 200m and 800m freestyle and 100m and 200m backstroke where she achieved an impressive fifth place.
Graham said: “It’s a great event, where there are swimmers aged from 18-89 years old and I am really pleased with my perform- ance, I wanted to win medals in all my events and the British record is the icing on the cake. “I have to dedicate my success this year to Ben Pollard who was the Ilkley Swimming Club coach until August this year. “Sadly Ben passed away peacefully on Sunday, he was great coach and mentor and will be sadly missed by all the swimmers and parents at Ilkley Swimming Club.”
For any Master Swimmers (over 18) interested in joining the club, which trains at the Ilkley Denton Road pool, spaces are available and further information can be found on the club’s website www.ilkleyswimmingclub.co.uk
