Ilkley's Euan nets county title
10:01am Thursday 5th September 2013 in Sport
Tennis starlet Euan Wilson-Baig is setting his sights on Europe in 2014 after a successful summer.
The 13-year-old Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club member not only won the Dacre, Son & Hartley under-14 boys’ singles at his own club’s open tournament, but also lifted the Yorkshire Closed title at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.
He also competed in the main draw in the HSBC Road To Wimbledon finals at The All-England Club.
Wilson-Baig won four matches in the county closed, not dropping a set en route to the final.
He beat second seed Joshua Lazenby in the semi-finals before edging out top rated Lewis Cox 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Euan also won the under-14 boys’ doubles with Paul Jubb and reached the semi-finals of the under-16 singles before bowing to second seed Max Gallins.
On the famous grass courts at Wimbledon, Wilson-Baig, who qualified second in his group, lost in the first round 6-1, 6-3 to Lewis Denton.
However, he reached the boys’ doubles quarter-finals unseeded with Jubb, beating sixth seeds W Cooke Wharton and Jonathan Simmonds 5-7, 7-5 (10-7) before going out 6-2, 6-3 to third seeds J Beuttell-Triggs and William Matthews 6-2, 6-3.
Wilson-Baig, who is to be formally presented with his county trophy at the Yorkshire LTA Tennis annual meeting in Leeds in December, is hoping to travel across Europe playing tournaments in 2014, thereby emulating Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal.
Euan is working closely with his coach, former professional Andy Banks, his fitness instructor Terry Pearson and the team at Ilkley in order to achieve his potential.
If anyone is interested in sponsoring Euan, they should contact his coach on firstname.lastname@example.org, his parents on email@example.com or Ilkley Tennis Club on 01943-607182.
