New Zealand’s Marcus Daniell edged out Great Britain’s Tom Farquharson to take the Aegon GB Pro-Series Ilkley title in three sets on Saturday.

The eighth seed, who had also come through close quarter-final and semi-final matches, won the men’s singles final of the Kirbys International Tennis Festival 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Seventh seed Farquharson, who had also reached the final of a similar tournament in Manchester the previous week, said: “It was a one-sided final last week and this week was much closer. I hope to go one better next week at Felixstowe and take the title there.”

Daniell then paired up with GB’s Richard Gabb in the doubles final to beat compatriots George Coupland and Joe Salisbury in an even closer final 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

Ilkley tournament director Caroline Buncall said: “There have been lots of exciting matches on and the Brits have featured really strongly this year. Even the sun has shone down on us and it’s been great to play all the matches on grass.”

The main local sponsors, Kirbys Solicitors, also supported a fantastic schools’ programme during the week, which saw more than 400 children having coaching followed by an hour of watching the tennis.

They were also invited to come down to a “Search for a Star” free coaching event on the morning of finals’ day and more than 50 children participated, with the winner receiving the prize of a year’s free coaching at the club.

Partner and family law specialist Alison Gray said: “We have been keen to support the grass roots events taking place during the tennis festival, many of which have involved local schools and young people.”

Amanda Lee, partner and private client specialist at Kirbys, added: ”We are keen to give something back to the local community by sponsoring the north’s premier grass court event and have been delighted to support this year’s Aegon GB Pro-Series in Ilkley."
