It’s all change at Ben Rhydding Cricket Club.
The Aire-Wharfe Division One club, who retained that status in thrilling fashion on the final day of last season, have handed the captaincy to Australian overseas player Jason Wright following Nick Smith’s departure to relegated Adel.
“I’m looking forward to it as it’s a great challenge,” said Wright. “This will be my third year at Ben Rhydding and we’ve got a really good young team. We’ve got a lot of potential.”
Although no signings have been completed, the Wright is confident of adding to his team before the season starts on the April 20.
“It’s always tough to sign new players, but we’ve spoken to a few guys and I’m confident of getting a couple of lads in. It’s important we do, because obviously Nick and his brother Chris have gone to Adel.”
Wright plans to use his experience of high level cricket in Australia to good effect.
“We’re going to train twice a week and harder, too, it’s important, especially in such a young team.”
Young they are, the side could take on an average age of just 22.
“After last season, when survival was the only target, I think we can go on and improve our league position again, like we have done for the last five seasons. Mid table is our aim,” Wright said.
