Walshaw urged to make it hard for Lions boss to leave him out

Ilkley Gazette: Striker James Walshaw has shown good form Striker James Walshaw has shown good form

Guiseley manager Steve Kittrick believes that popular striker James Walshaw is rediscovering his best form.

After the front man had scored in Tuesday’s 2-1 home win over Corby, Kittrick was singing the player’s praises.

He said: “ James Walshaw played exceptionally against Corby.

“He played well in the second half on Saturday and is coming back to his best.

“If he keeps playing like that he will make it hard for me to leave him out and that is what I want from him.”

Kittrick, who was last night running the rule over Saturday’s opponents Oxford City who were in action away to Chester City, was also pleased with the way his men played against Corby.

The Lions went a goal behind in the first half and then suffered the frustration of seeing their goalkeeper Paul Walker pull off some stunning saves.

“I don’t think 1-0 down at half-time was a fair reflection of the game.

“Their keeper made three great saves.

“It reminded me of the game at Bishops Stortford last season where they had a young goalkeeper on loan from Tottenham who played the game of his life.

“That young lad stopped us from going up with that performance.”

The Guiseley boss was delighted with the response of his side in the second half as they made it three wins from three games in 2013.

“I told the players at half-time that it was important to score first as the team getting the first goal would go on to win.”

Thankfully for Guiseley it was Walshaw who equalised before Josh Wilson netted the winner.

It helped Guiseley continue their pursuit of Chester who have been setting a hot pace.

Kittrick acknowledges that there is still a big gap to make up.

“We need to keep winning and chipping away at their lead. We need to put pressure on them because they will drop points somewhere along the way.”
