Olympic double silver medallist Debbie Flood has become the first woman to be elected captain of the famous Leander Rowing Club in almost 200 years.
It is a huge honour for the 32-year-old who retired from international competition after finishing sixth in the quadruple sculls at the London Olympics.
She is also following some famous rowers into the role of captain. Olympic gold medal winners Steve Williams, Mark Hunter and James Cracknell have all held the post Flood, pictured, has enjoyed a glittering career since joining the famous Henley club 15 years ago after earlier making her name as a GB Judo international and 1500 metres runner while growing up in Guiseley.
Since then she has won three world championship golds in the women’s quad and two Olympic silvers — in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008.
Flood said: “I’m extremely proud to have been appointed captain of such a great club that I’ve grown up in through my senior career.
“I hope to follow the great captains that have been before me and continue to inspire and be a role model in the club.”
Flood has won three titles at Henley Royal Regatta and became the only British woman to win in the Princess Royal Challenge Cup in 2000.
Despite stepping down from international competition, Flood will continue to row for her club.
