Over the years, many inspiring individuals have been featured in this newspaper.
Whether they have accomplished great feats in the worlds of sport or the arts, sailed round the world for charity, or gone that extra mile for a loved one, there are many individuals whose stories remain fixed in the minds of readers long after the paper hits the street.
But there is one story in this week’s edition that will touch the hearts of all who read it – the story of Edward Sharpe.
Edward, 8, and his friends from Hawksworth Primary School have organised a sponsored walk to raise money for the research fund which helps children with hyperinsulinism.
Edward, from Guiseley, was diagnosed with the condition shortly after birth. His body produces too much insulin and in order to avoid a coma, his diet has to be constantly monitored to ensure his blood sugar levels are kept stable.
But despite his health problems, Edward refuses to dwell on his illness, which is why he, too, is taking part in a sponsored three-mile hike in aid of the Children’s Hyperinsulinism Fund.
In an incredible show of unity, he and his friends organised the entire event themselves, from informing parents of their intentions (using the skills of the school secretary) to deciding on the location for the event. Through their actions, these children have shown that they are capable of true friendship – by offering up their time to help someone they care about.
Walking three miles at the age of eight, organising sponsor forms and deciding on the length and location of the walk is no mean feat and after reading the story of Edward one thing becomes certain: The country may be going through a recession – but if there is one cause worthy of sponsoring this summer it is the walk organised by Edward and his classmates.
