Isn't it time to show some tolerance

The travellers who come every year to a field in Ilkley, where they rest on their way to the Appleby Horse Fair, are long gone.

But they have left behind some mixed feelings. Lots of people are glad to see the back of them, but others say we should welcome them, even take advantage of the fact that they come to Ilkley every year.

Whether Ilkley will go as far as to welcome the travellers with open arms and get local children involved in learning about their heritage and culture remains to be seen.

Given that the travellers’ visits are only once a year, for a few days at a time, and we know they are not setting up a permanent campsite – in which case there would be serious cause for concern – isn’t it time that we all showed just a little more tolerance of other people’s lifestyles?
