Thought for the Week

by Rob Fry

AS I pen this, it’s been a week since we patriots, sports, tennis fans got to witness Andy Murray's second clinching of a Wimbledon title. Something alas that had eluded his predecessor Mr Henman! (not that we weren’t also “willing” him victory). And as the afternoon's sporting action played out, we saw Andy play a perfect game in the gaze of the world's TV cameras and more locally - celebrities, the famous, great and good. Each of these willing him on to give his all and be a winner. Triumphantly grasping that huge golden trophy Andy gave tribute to those who had been willing him on, as well he should, an environment where people are for you is surely easier to prosper in than a hostile one. In the beautiful game home fans are often referred to as the 12th man.

Anyway one of those observing from the Royal Box was our nation's Prime Minister and Andy made comment how his job was relatively “easy” compared to the complexities of Mr Cameron’s! Yet a few days later on the day when he himself passed on the baton to another to lead our country, he said: “I will be watching, willing you on…” which despite my own position on politics, I felt that this was a generous, positive closing comment. A blessing perhaps?

There are a few stand out figures in life that have “willed me on…” in unerring support, have brought out the best - parents, grandparents, a teacher, wife, children, a few friends… Some of these are now no longer with us. Yet their encouragement still challenges me to be the best husband, father, friend, craftsman, businessman.

The book of Hebrews describes that we are “Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses…” I often feel the warmth and backing of my own cloud of witnesses, ones who have gone before me – willing me to succeed.

Thank you, it helps!
