No changes as old guard sweep home

THE local council election results in Wharfedale produced no major shocks and resulted in many sitting candidates finding favour with the voters.
In Bradford overall, Labour lost several seats to be almost neck and neck with conservatives while still remaining the largest single party. A deal with the Liberal Democrats should see City Hall remaining Conservative controlled.
In Leeds, the Labour vote held firm with the party bucking the national trend and not losing any seats. Like in neighbouring Bradford, Labour is the biggest single party but will almost certainly be kept out of power.
Two of the key members of the Tory leadership, Anne Hawesworth (Ilkley) and Dale Smith (Wharfedale) were returned with comfortable majorities, while Adrian Naylor kept hold of Craven for the Conservatives. In Ilkley, Anne Hawkesworth, the portfolio holder for the environment, had a 2,526 majority over Labour's Andrew Dundas who polled 719 votes.
Dale Smith had a 2,041 majority over the Liberal Democrat Vernon Whelan in Wharfedale, while Adrian Naylor had a 2,296 majority in Craven.
