Agreement reached on Backstone Beck water works

An agreement has been struck between Bradford Council and the Environment Agency regarding the maintenance of a flood-prone Ilkley stream.

Representatives of the agency and Bradford Council have been in talks about Backstone Beck, which runs from Ilkley Moor to the River Wharfe, passing through residential and business areas of town.

Blockages of culverts on the stream have caused several floods in recent years, leading to calls for better maintenance and regular checks for debris.

The Environment Agency is primarily responsible for the water course, but Bradford Council has responsibilities as riparian owner of some sections.

The council has arranged for vegetation along the banks from Leeds Road Sacred Heart Primary School to be cleared.

And principal drainage engineer, Tony Poole, has organised for highways officers to remove any future build-up of silt under the A65.
