Teams of staff and pupils from St Mary’s Catholic High School in Menston spent their summer tackling the terrain of Tanzania.
A total of 51 students and six staff set off in four teams on the World Challenge Expedition bound for Tanzania.
After landing in Nairobi, Kenya, an overland journey took them over the border to Arusha and Moshi in Tanzania. The month-long expedition included an acclimatisation phase with smaller climbs in the Usambaras mountain range and Mount Longido.
The main challenge phase saw some students, pictured left, tackle the almost 15,000ft Mount Meru, or climbing up to more than 19,300 feet on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The students also helped with building and maintenance work at a primary school, and enjoyed a relaxation phase, with activities including sightseeing kayaking, snorkelling, sailing and a safari.
Summit success rates for the group were high with only two challengers failing to summit due to altitude sickness.
