Mobile stone with new Ilkley Moor GPS trail!

It is a case of mobile stone after the Friends of Ilkley Moor launched the first ever GPS Trail to discover the Cup and Ring Stones dotted throughout the landscape
Today’s technology is coming together with ancient carved stones in a new trail launched by the Friends of Ilkley Moor.
The group has created the first ever Cup and Ring Stone GPS trail on Ilkley Moor.
There are more than 400 known carved stones in this area and the wider Rombalds Moor, carved during the Neolithic to Bronze Age period.
But the reasons why the enigmatic cups, rings and lines were created remains a mystery.
Two members of The Friends – Colin Beecham and Barry Wilkinson – have spent the past few months locating some of the stones, recording the coordinates, and planning the trail.
Mr Wilkinson said: ”We appreciate the trail needs a certain knowledge of using GPS, but we hope it will appeal to our younger members.
“This was the case when I tried the walk out on three of my grandchildren, who spend most of their leisure time glued to computers. They were fascinated when they took turns using the GPS to find the eight stones on the trail, which takes about two hours, starting and ending at White Wells car park on Ilkley Moor.”
