Close-knit town gets the needle

Knitting on trees in Ilkley Knitting on trees in Ilkley

Olympic spirit is still alive and well in Ilkley – and so is one of the country’s traditional crafts.

Creative knitters have turned part of South Hawks-worth Street car park into a patriotic corner of red, white and blue.

Coloured knitted covers have been wrapped around some of the trees in the car park, as well as innovative knitted bunting plus red, white and blue decorations.

This picture was sent in by reader, Bill Berrett, who congratulated the knitters on their work, and thanked them for their colourful tribute.

The crafty creation has met with the admiration of many local residents, who have also reported spotting additional pompoms appearing as Team GB’s medal count rose.
