The Royal Mail commemorated the Brownlee brothers’ triumph by producing a gold medal winner stamp, showing Alistair in action, and by painting the postbox in New Road Side, Horsforth, gold.

But a spokesman said there will only be one golden postbox, despite calls for a second in Bramhope.

Bramhope and Carlton Parish Council clerk, Kate Fraser, said: “Perhaps it would be nice to have two boxes.

“There is one just opposite where they live in Bramhope, which would have been ideal.”

Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland has also written to the Royal Mail asking for gold, silver and bronze postboxes in tribute to the Brownlee brothers and Otley’s Lizzie Armitstead, who came second in the women’s cycling road race.
