Village comes up smelling of roses

Britain in Bloom first-timer Addingham came up smelling of roses as the sun shone for the visit of Royal Horticultural Society judges today

Community organisations and villagers pulled together in a special effort for Addingham’s debut in the Small Town section of the prestigious national horticultural contest. Judges were taken on a tour of the village by volunteer group Addingham Garden Friends, visiting highlights including Addingham Primary School’s grounds and the “Hen Pen”on Main Street - a rustic former hen run turned into a floral public garden. Residents also transformed the badly fire-damaged Village Store on Main Street into an Addingham in Bloom florists shop for the day, painting boards in the windows to look like flowers on display and even a shopkeeper in the boarded-up doorway. The results will be announced in a ceremony at St Peter Port, Guernsey in October.
