A group of property professionals are ready to get back in the saddle to raise money for a nine-year-old girl left paralysed after falling off a climbing frame.

And the six men can finally ride the 130 miles from Scarborough to Morecambe this month after having to postpone the attempt when one of them fell off his bike and suffered an injury in a training run.

They hope to raise £2,000, with the money split between Martin House Children’s Hospice and the Being Bel Trust, set up to support Bel Young, a former pupil at Moorfield School in Ilkley.

She needed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after the incident in a neighbour's garden last June, which left her with a broken neck, unable to move her arms and legs and needing a ventilator to breathe.

A year on, and the youngster is now out of hospital and living with her family, thanks to the Being Bel fundraising campaign to buy the equipment and help she needs for her ongoing care.

The six cyclists have been training for their ride across the country on Wednesday and Thursday, July 13 and 14, with Mike Atkinson back among the group after falling off his bike.

The men were due to ride in May, but the challenge was postponed after Mr Atkinson suffered substantial injuries and his bike was written off when he crashed in training.

“I was riding downhill on a training ride when I rode over a pothole and my wheel buckled,” Mr Atkinson, of Atkinson Associates, said.

“I flew off the bike and slid along the ground for 30 yards. I didn’t have much skin left on my back or legs, bruised my ribs and had to buy a new bike.

“I’ve only just started to get my fitness levels back up but the others have all been training hard and are raring to go.”

So far the group has raised more than £1,000 towards their £2,000 target.

As well as the support of family, friends and colleagues, they are hoping that their property industry peers will get behind them and make their fundraising efforts a success.
