Collapsed Addingham food shop is set to be rebuilt

A LANDMARK that threatened to come crashing down in the centre of Addingham almost a year ago, jeopardising a thriving village business, could be back in one piece this spring.

Work is well under way at the Good Food Shop bistro, which stands at the corner of Main Street and George Street, and hopes are high that the building will be complete in April or May.

Upper floors of the building, which is owned by a private landlord, began to topple over in February, prompting the temporary closure of Main Street. Bradford Council structural engineers then ordered the partial demolition of the three-storey building.

The Good Food Shop itself also runs a delicatessen in the village and an outdoor event catering business.

Joint owner, Richard Kent, said it was ‘good news’ to see the work taking place, and the bistro plans to move back in. “We’re waiting with bated breath,” he said.

Members of Addingham Civic Society were recently given a close-up look at the building site and shown the work in progress to restore the building.

The civic society says one of the hold-ups with reconstructing the building was that the unusual curved lintel, needed to support the upper elevations, ahd to be specifically calculated and manufactured. It was not possible for builders to take a template of the original.
