Addingham people to get their say on new recreational facilities

Villagers and groups interested in new recreational facilities in Addingham are being invited to have their say.

After last week’s meeting, Addingham Parish Council chairman Coun Alison Widdup issued an invitation for potential users of the proposed Addingham recreation centre to talk to the parish council.

Coun Widdup said the steering group was ‘very excited’ about the project, which it feels will give a fantastic leisure benefit to the village in years to come.

Consultation with residents for the Parish Plan already highlighted the need for various new activities, she said.

As well as the need to replace the Scout Hut, said Coun Widdup, a general need was identified for better facilities for people of all generations to meet socially, and to take part in sports or other physical activities.

Coun Widdup said: “Some of the specific ideas mentioned include football teams for girls and the under-nines, ballroom dancing classes, a youth band, tennis courts and a gym.

“We know there are plenty more out there – did you know that for example we have no netball courts anywhere in the village yet we have a team representing the village in the Harrogate League?”

The need for more sports facilities was a strong and frequent request from children and young people consulted for the plan, she said, as well as older members of the community.

“I’d like to extend an invitation to everyone – both people and groups – in the village that might be potential users of the recreation centre to get in touch with Michelle Holland so that we can understand demand and the needs of the village in more detail and build the business case so that we can secure grant funding to take this excellent and important project forward,” said Coun Widdup.
