On a mercifully sunny day last Thursday, BBC Antiques Roadshow set up its marquees at Bolton Abbey and waited for the treasures.

They duly rolled in - literally in the case of a stunning 1926 Citroën B12 Torpedo, which pretty well stole the show.

But there were a lot of more modest items and a lot of happy punters.

One such was Heathcliffe Bowen, Chairman of Ilkley Parish Council. He took along three paintings by his great-grandfather, noted Staithes Group artist Owen Bowen (1873-1967) and was very pleased with the valuations given by expert Rupert Maas.

Two of the works also have significant sentimental value to Councillor Bowen. The smaller oil, a Connemara scene from 1904, was a wedding present to his parents from the artist and the watercolour of Fowey harbour a christening gift to himself. The larger oil, featuring Ravenscar and dating from the 1930s, was inherited from an aunt.

Councillor Bowen intends to sell this painting in aid of the new premises at Ilkley Rugby Club.

It will come up for auction at a Hartleys' fine art sale in the not-too-distant future and the auctioneer has agreed to waive his seller's premium in this good cause.
