A NEW blue plaque has been unveiled in Addingham to mark a historic site.
Addingham Civic Society's ninth blue plaque marks the site of the old railway bridge which spans Back Beck Lane near the village school. Bridge No 55 was completed by the Midland Railway Company in 1888 and for 78 years carried passengers and freight linking Addingham with all parts of the country. It still stands today as a monument to the skill of the 19th century stonemasons and engineers.
The unveiling ceremony on April 9 was conducted by Andy Savage, Executive Director of the Railway Heritage Trust. There was a great turnout from village residents.
Jim Robinson, chairman of Addingham Civic Society said: "This Bridge is a very worthy recipient of a plaque and brings the total in the village to nine. We have another four plaques in the pipeline and at that point will probably draw a line under a satisfying and worthwhile project."
