ILKLEY householders are to pay just under three per cent more for their fire and rescue services.

The West Yorkshire brigade has agreed a council tax precept rise of 2.99 per cent.

The fire and rescue authority says it is losing a further £1.39 million of Government grant in 2018-19.

And it adds that by 2019-20, the overall reduction across four years will amount to £7.9m.

But fire chiefs say the increased precept, equating to an extra 3.5p a week for the average council tax payer, will enable a funding shortfall to be bridged and firefighter recruitment to continue.

Chief Fire Officer John Roberts said: "Since 2010 our fire and rescue service has gone through major changes, as we have seen significant reductions in our budgets.

"This year sees us still having to meet financial challenges, whilst providing the very best service we can afford to the communities of West Yorkshire.

"We will endeavour to maintain our current level of service provision."

Authority chairman, Councillor Judith Hughes, said: "Despite the small precept increase, we are still one of the lowest cost-per-head-of-population fire authorities in the country and are committed to providing the public of West Yorkshire with the high level of service they deserve."
