AN 'OUTSTANDING' Yeadon butcher is calling it a day after more than 40 years.

David Meays has been running his shop on Town Street since 1977 - but he and his wife, Lynn, will close up for the final time on Saturday, March 3.

The decision was announced on the David Meays Butchers Facebook page in a statement that said: "David and Lynn would like to announce that they are retiring. From 2pm on Saturday, March 3 the shop will close.

"We would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our customers for their custom and support over many years.

"The shop is closing but don’t forget there is another fantastic butchers from this family on Gill Lane in Yeadon - J B Meays and son.

"Once again thank you to all our customers."

Mr Meays, 66, started at the shop as an apprentice on March 1, 1968 and took over the business in 1977.

He told the Wharfedale & Aireborough Observer that he and his wife had been moved by all the kind words they had received from customers since announcing their retirement.

He added: "I'm sorry the place has to close but unfortunately no-one has come forward to take it over - that's my one regret.

"I own the place so eventually I'll empty it out and look to sell it."

Dozens of customers, past and present, posted their best wishes - and thanks - in response to the announcement.

Paul Lambert said: "Enjoy your retirement together and all the best.

"You have both done an outstanding job in the shop all these years and you will be missed."

Sue Butler posted: "A very well deserved retirement to you both.

"It is ten years since we moved from Yeadon but it was always a first rate traditional butcher's shop.

"We always enjoyed everything that we ever bought from you in the 27 years that we lived there."

Grahame Coulson said: "We will all miss the legendary Yeadon Meays Butchers and all the top quality products they sold, especially the Fillet Steaks, they were special.

"I used to buy them to cook one of my family's favourite dishes, Fillet Steak with mushroom and red wine sauce.

"Please enjoy your well deserved and happy retirement and regards to all the Meays."

Cass Luty added: "All the best in your retirement both of you!

"You deserve some quality time to enjoy together.

"It's sad to see such a wonderful butchers go and we will miss getting our annual mince pies order on bonfire night."
