AN ASSOCIATE lecturer in journalism from Leeds Trinity University has won an industry award.

Richard Horsman received the Broadcast Journalism Training Council Special Recognition Award for Services to Journalism and Journalism Training.

Mr Horsman, who has worked at Leeds Trinity University for 23 years, was awarded the prestigious award in recognition of his work and commitment in training journalism students. Since becoming a lecturer in 1993, Richard has trained more than 400 journalism students at Leeds Trinity.

He said: "I’m delighted to have got the recognition from the BJTC as it’s recognition from the industry, and to get that pat on the back from the broadcast industry is amazing. It’s a great privilege to work with young people when they put their trust in you to get them into a career. I’m so proud to have achieved that with more than 400 students over 23 years."

Richard began his radio career with Pennine Radio, now The Pulse, in Bradford as a copywriter and progressed to Features Editor, Senior Producer and News Editor. He worked in the industry alongside training postgraduate students at Leeds Trinity University, before joining the University full time in 2007.

His postgraduate trainees won the BBC Developing Talent Journalism Award in 2009 and 2011. Richard's previous trainees have also twice won the Student Radio Journalist of the Year title from Press Gazette, and numerous awards from the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.

Richard stepped down from his full time role at Leeds Trinity last year, but continues to work as an Associate Lecturer.
