BEN Rhydding Hockey Club were excited to be officially opening their second Astro Turf pitch at the weekend.

Despite the inclement weather there was a large turnout to witness the cutting of the ribbons and play in a number of hockey matches throughout the day.

Past president, Noel Hutton, was aided by four junior members in opening the main pitch. This was followed by the opening of the new Grandstand by Rachel Lowe in memory of her late husband, Robert. Robert was instrumental in the setting up of the new club structures that enabled the Sports Club to achieve a second pitch.

With a second pitch the club should be able to accommodate many more youngsters who are keen to take up hockey and reduce the lengthy waiting list that has been in operation for many years. They will also be able to reduce their reliance on other local pitches to accommodate all their weekend games whilst welcoming Skipton Ladies Hockey Club and the many Yorkshire Youth Hockey Leagues to make use of the facilities for their fixtures.

Ben Rhydding Sports Club President, Andrew Musgrave, said it was great to be able to involve so many younger players in the opening ceremony while reflecting that hockey continues to be enjoyed by many players into their fifties and sixties. Hockey provides a great combination of opportunities to keep fit and socialise.

There are plenty of opportunities for members of the community to play, coach, help out and support at Ben Rhydding, as well as opportunities for other groups to hire the pitches. Further details can be found at www.brhc.co.uk
