EVER wondered how bellringing works? Now you can find out.
The bellringers at Ilkley's All Saints Church are having a Tower Open Day on Saturday, September 9 as part of the national Heritage Open Days initiative. They will be explaining the ancient and uniquely English art of change ringing, it's history, how the bells are rung and what ringing 'methods' are. There will be demonstrations, and the opportunity for visitors to try ringing a bell.
Visitors can attend any one of the ten half-hour sessions, which can be pre-booked on the website www.ilkleybellringing.org.uk. Tower Captain Sue Green said: "Lots of people are curious about how ringing is actually done, so this is a great chance to come and find out, and even have a go yourself. One quick word of warning - the stairs are steep, so sensible shoes are best."
Newest recruit Kathryn Hornsby said: "It's really good fun. It takes some practice to get the hang of it but I'm really enjoying learning to handle a bell, and can't wait to get to the next stage of learning a method."
