A MEMORIAL garden at Menston is to receive a Royal award.
The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Virginia Lloyd, will present a Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award to the Friends of High Royds Memorial Garden on Sunday, September 10.
The ceremony will take place during a Thanksgiving Service at the garden's chapel, on Buckle Lane, at 4pm - rounding off a national Heritage Open Days weekend.*
The presentation follows a visit to Buckingham Palace earlier this summer by three members of the Friends' management committee - Alan Storey, Ron Sweeney and Quentin Mackenzie.
The trio enjoyed afternoon tea at the Palace of St James with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and other award winners.
The Duke expressed his admiration for the work that has been carried out on the previously derelict chapel and paupers graveyard that was used by the former High Royds psychiatric hospital.
*The memorial garden will be open from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, September 9 and from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, September 10 during the heritage event.
