ADDINGHAM Film Club are commemorating the death of its founder, Joanne Slaven, on June 30.

A special showing of ‘Searching for Sugar Man’, which was chosen by her husband, Colin Waterman, will commemorate her life.

Jo was a huge film fan, and had the initial idea to create a film club in Addingham in 2008. She contacted the British Film Society for help, then persuaded her friends to come on board. Jo helped run the film club with the Addingham Film Club Committee until she passed away in June last year.

‘Searching for Sugar Man’ is about Sixto Rodriguez, a 1970s rock and roller. It investigates Rodriguez's life and the mystery surrounding his death. The film was chosen because Jo was a huge fan of rock and roll.

Addingham Film Club are inviting everyone in Addingham, and the surrounding area, to remember Jo’s life, and to celebrate her contribution to the local community. The special showing of ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ will be at Addingham Memorial Hall on June 30 at 7:30pm. Tickets will be £4.

A representative from Addingham Film Club said: “All proceeds will go to Addingham Garden Friends. Jo loved walking around Addingham with her little dog, so we hope whatever is made will go towards more flowers for the village. Addingham Garden Friends does a fabulous job.”

Addingham film club is still run by a group of friends on the Addingham Film Club Committee. It is a voluntary organisation based at Addingham Memorial Hall, which serves filmgoers in Wharfedale. The club will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, and is considered to be a valuable asset to Addingham. Addingham Film Club was originally set up by: Jo Slaven, Dawn Brady, Judith Lingard, Hilary Best, Maggie Ginty, Charlene Hodgson and Cathy Thompson.
