ANOTHER fun and practical week of events, organised by the Friends of Ilkley Moor (FoIM), took place on Ilkley Moor during the second week of May.

It started with a guided walk for the Wharfedale Naturalist Society, where people learnt about the FoIM ‘Big Ilkley Moor Survey’ and how biological recording by local naturalist groups on Ilkley Moor will help with this.

People were then taken to the White Wells cottage, then along to the upper tarn and shown some important wetland sites.

The next event was the River Corridor Survey, where people were taught how to undertake a river corridor survey on one of the becks, using standardised survey methodology. People discovered the different habitats adjacent to the streams, the plants and animal found there and how to map these.

An event in wildlife identification and surveying for frogs and toads also took place; where people were introduced to the ecology, surveying and conservation of these two species. Biological records were collected at these events as part of the ‘Big Ilkley Moor Survey’.

Project officer Tracy Gray said: "People learnt great skills at these events as well as helping out with valuable research. Everyone had a great time which as well as helping to conserve Ilkley Moor also provided time for people to discover and explore the beauty of the moor. People said that they were looking forward to attending more events from this year’s events and learning programme."

The events programme and heritage walks can be downloaded from the FOIM website www.ilkleymoor.org or collected from Ilkley Information Centre and shops in the town.
