A COLLECTION will be held in Ilkley this weekend to help older people get out of their homes and into the countryside.

Ilkley and District Good Neighbours will collect donations in Booths Supermarket, on Saturday, April 22. Money raised will go towards the group's twice yearly excursions for older people.

This year's trips will take place on Wednesday, May 23 and Wednesday, July 5. Guests will be taken on an afternoon drive to the Yorkshire Dales, followed by afternoon tea at Bolton Abbey Cavendish Pavilion Cafe.

The free outings are funded by personal donations and grants from various organisations. The scheme was launched eight years ago and the excursions have proved to be immensely popular with older people who find it hard to get out into the countryside.

A spokesman said: "The aim of these excursions is simply to enable older residents the opportunity to get out of their homes and to interact with other people. If anyone would like to be considered for future trips – or offer to help us in any way - please telephone the office on 01943 603348 or email info@goodneighbours.ilkley.org. Although Ilkley Good Neighbours does have some funding from organisations and individuals it relies on continual financial support and also much-needed input from volunteers."

Ilkley Good Neighbours operate a number of schemes to support independent living within the community, including befriending, shop assist, excursions, over 90’s party and Christmas parcels.
